Precision Spheres

Glass and ceramic spheres are used in a wide variety of applications

Examples include:

Precision

Used as flow meter balls where red and black balls give
clear visibility
Used as gauging and measuring standards

Wear

Silicon nitride balls are used in high speed bearings because of their superb wear properties, light weight and low thermal expansion
Large zirconia balls are used in down hole drilling applications in the oil industry where they resist wear from abrasive particles

Optical

Spherical and hemispherical ball lenses are used in fibre optic and laser applications
They can be anti reflection coated to significantly improve optical transmission

Corrosion

Glass and ceramic balls are used in check valves where corrosive chemicals are being pumped
